Assorted Oddities, 2.22

The last few months have been relatively busy with family, work and some fun stuff. This post is overdue and is about a handful of the oddities and events.

More Characters with Character

I’m over 100 characters carved and have enjoyed expanding the variety and digging deeper into a few themes. I opened up Ravenbot Workshop on Etsy and learning that platform from a seller’s point of view.

I’ve also been playing with movement and posable attributes for some of these carvings.

Some of these are available on the Etsy shop, but all of them have more pics over on theMirrorpool, my photo site.

Salton Sea Solo Camp

Between work and everything else I was able to squeeze in a few days of camping out at Salton Sea State Park. It was quiet and pretty nice weather overall. I pretty much sat at the table and carved while listening to music for a couple days straight. It was a good recharge. Gabby got Beth all to herself for a few days. :)

Quick Garden Update

We’ve gotten good results with most of our herb boxes, but it was time to refresh a few of the plants. It was also time to plant new in the garden boxes. We have a pretty wide open growing season here, so trying out two different planting of peas and some carrots and beets for staples.

Hummingbird Babies, Round 2

Our backyard hummingbirds came back to their previous nest. We knew they were out there zipping around and chirping and were really please to see when they eventually left behind two tic-tac sized eggs. We kept our distance as best as possible but checked in on them routinely. With the winds we had, there were days that we were surprised they made it. Two ugly little chicks appear to be healthy (hungry) and have quickly grown into something more bird-like. Probably just a few days till they fly.

First: shortly after they hatched. Second: first time we saw them feeding. Third: just a few days later, their feathers are all in and their eyes are open.

Walnut Kitchen Utensils

Sparked by an article I saw in Woodcarving Illustrated I kind of jumped to the end and carved several kitchen utensils out of walnut, sanded them smooth (mostly ;)) and have finished them with mineral oil. They have a really nice feel and the wood is pretty. Fun to do and will only get better as I do more of them in the future.

Thanks for reading. Looking forward to learning more woodworking techniques, seeing the garden come into full growth and walking out into the backyard someday soon to find the Hummingbird chicks have vacated the premesis.
