Death Valley, 4.21

In April we were able to make a long-awaited journey through the northern end of Death Valley. We covered approximately 200 miles of dirt roads/trails. We had a good time and really nice weather. Our friends Danny and Lorrie lead the way as they have lots of experience out there and our friend Bill, his pup and girlfriend joined us. We also had new friends we met up with for a total of 6 then 7 vehicles. We took in Ubehebe Crater, Teakettle Junction and camped out at the Racetrack the first day. The second day we ventured our way through Lippincott Trail, Saline Valley and camped at the Eureka Dunes. Due to some delays with the group helping some tourists–Kazakhstani folks who made some poor decisions and broke their rental on the trail–and then cutting a tire as we climbed through Steel Pass/Dedeckera Canyon our time at camp was a bit short, but we had great weather and enjoyed the company of the group.

Tire Down!

While climbing Steel Pass we were moving pretty quickly and unfortunately I cut a tire on one of the climbs. We were able to get the truck in a safe spot and with some help from Dan we got the tire changed out and were back on the move within 30 or 40 minutes.

Running on E

Despite carrying an extra 9+ gallons of gas we were running on fumes as we descended to Eureka Dunes. That was a bit eerie feeling and we were thankfully able to get an extra gallon from our friend Bill that ensured we would make it back to pavement. Next time well bring MOAR!

Camp at Eureka Dunes

Our second camp night we had a bit more time and everyone pitched in firewood for a nice big fire. Good company and pleasant weather, it was especially nice to not have anything more than a breeze.

Adventure Frenchie

Gabby did great overall but we realized it was a bit too much excitement for her for that long of a trip. On one of the hits we took in the “Fluff of Doom” we suspect she sprained her shoulder. She recovered after a couple days once we got home, but we’ll be rethinking her seat for future off-road trips. She was definitely tired of being in the truck and on the move at the end of the trip, but I know we all were.
