Casein and Gouache, 06.16

Had the opportunity to do a bit of painting while on vacation visiting my folks so experimented with Caesin (a new medium to me) as well as some Gouache. Caesin is a water based milk protein based paint, is quick drying as well as maintains a bit of a body when its dry. Gouache is also water based and  both dry to a matte finish. My experience with Gouache goes back to 2D design classes, its a neat if tedious medium to work with.

Anyway, onto some pics...

A small Caesin gradient test piece, my brushwork is a little rusty.

Another Caesin piece, experimenting to see how much opacity it carries overtop of previous layers.

Experimenting with using more paint medium in a more impressionistic style. This one was my favorite from this brief exploration.

As a medium, Gouache is a bit touchier to work with. As it dries it changes color, so matching an existing color is near impossible, additionally it is prone to showing brush strokes in the finished surface if you don't do it all in one go. Its a technical challenge to work with but a medium I'll definitely pick up again. This next series of images is a process shot from beginning to end, enjoy.

And finished.
